We left Bear Creek in Asheville at 10am on Thursday May 6th with Acey’s mileage at 72,167 and Thor’s at 83,844. Perfect weather for driving!
We soon drove in to South Carolina – our 26th state in Acey.
We arrived at 1:00 for an overnight stay at the Barnyard RV Park in Lexington, SC.
While Jim got things set up. Linda made tuna sandwiches for lunch, and we went out for a short bike ride in nearby Columbia at the riverfront park.
This one-room Little Red School House was moved to the park by the City of Columbia. It operated from 1867 until 1913, and though little has changed within the school building, which contains blackboards, slates, and a school bell, the interior is not open to the public.
As we neared the end of the paved trail, we saw the lock system on the canal – the lock itself is on the left side of the photo – almost can make it out…
There was a dam over the Broad River to the left of the canal.

A couple more signs gave more information about the history of the locks.
The paved trail ran between the Broad River and the historic Columbia Canal from the Columbia Riverfront Park to the dam/lock area.
Very scenic – could have taken tons of photos!
Several turtles were soaking up some sun!
We rode 5 1/2 miles on a nice sunny afternoon! Afterwards, we stopped by Columbia Craft brewing for a couple of draughts.
We made a quick trip to Costco on Friday morning before leaving for Yemassee near the South Carolina coast. We packed a lot of fun into 25 hours!
Thanks for the update. Interesting about the canal. By my map, Yemassee, also on the Broad River; Plenty of sea islands there. Kayaking or canoe opportunities?
